unknown is a five-movement song cycle for mezzo-soprano, two baritones, and chamber ensemble, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery. With evocative poetry by Marcus Amaker, the work reflects the diversity of those who have served, fought, and died—many unknown—for our freedom. Each movement offers a unique perspective: a soldier’s solemn anthem of service and sacrifice; a Latin-tinged waltz capturing the ache of waiting; a soulful lament from a dying soldier; a reverent march honoring the guards who watch over the tomb; and a final, meditative In Memoriam that weaves together musical echoes from the previous movements. Drawing from a wide range of musical styles and colors, the piece explores themes of honor, death, and hope. Subtle quotations of “Taps” and America the Beautiful deepen its connection to tradition and memory. unknown is both a tribute and a meditation—on loss, legacy, and the enduring human cost of war.
