Gale and Zephyr (2023)
for concert band | Grade 6

Duration: 9.5 minutes
Premiere: November 28, 2023, Northern Illinois University Wind Ensemble; DeKalb, IL.

Gale and Zephyr explores the dual nature of wind as both a powerful and gentle force. The title reflects this contrast: “gale” representing a strong, commanding wind, and “zephyr” a soft, tranquil breeze. The work opens with a striking solo trumpet, evoking the onset of a gale, followed by bold brass, swirling winds, and vibrant percussion to depict a musical squall. As the piece develops, it transitions into a slower, quasi-impressionistic section that captures the serenity of a zephyr through delicate melodies and subtle harmonies. Even within this calm, Okpebholo introduces moments of disruption, suggesting the wind’s unpredictability. The final section builds to an energetic and dramatic climax, showcasing the full ensemble’s power and color. Throughout the piece, Okpebholo highlights the wind ensemble’s expressive range and dynamic capabilities.
