Dialogue for Tuba and Band was commissioned for Timothy Northcut and premiered at the 2014 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference. This three-movement concerto explores the expressive and virtuosic range of the tuba through contrasting musical voices: Passages offers both an introspective and dynamic opening; Steal Away reimagines the composer’s earlier setting of the spiritual for baritone and piano; and Groove closes the work with rhythmic drive, energy, and playful swagger. True to its title, Dialogue is a conversation—between soloist and ensemble, tradition and innovation, contemplation and celebration.
